Dessu, designed by Angie Suh, is a line "for the girl who likes to be a little bit dressed up, but in an effortless, natural way". This initial collection references a clean aesthetic that is a little bit woodsy, a little bit earthy, and very fresh.
Angie sites modernized art nouveau as an inspiration and imagined "woodland fairies mingling with lumberjacks and then wandering into the city" when creating the pieces. I see LL Bean mingling with Rag and Bone, with a modern twist. Perfect for the new refined urban warrior.
There is an obvious attention to detail in the designs, with artful cut outs strategically placed on the shoulders of many dresses (my personal favourite being the green dress above, paired with that campfire chic jacket).
Ms. Suh's design story has its roots in architecture, which she earned her degree in, before transitioning to clothing design full time. She honed her skills at Parsons, FIT, and then at such brands as Yigal Azrouel, Alice + Olivia and TSEsay, before launching her own brand.
Angie describes herself as silly, is clearly married to a man of great taste (who gifts Margiela?! can we connect him with my husband?), and even shares the same first album purchase as me, Michael Jackon's Thriller. Find out more about this wonderful designer and the new line Dessu in the interview below.
Dessu is an interesting name- does it have any special meaning?
Dessu is a play on my son Desmond's name. But in Japenese 'desu' means "it
is," in french 'dessus' means on top. So its sort of multi-layered.
You initially earned your degree in architecture before transitioning to
clothing design- how did that change come about and how does it work its
way into your pieces?
had really great experiences! But ultimately, I wanted to be more hands-on
in the design process. So I packed up and moved to New York! I still love
architecture and I'm always referencing it, especially in the initial
stages of designing a line.
You described the line as 'woodland fairy' & 'lumberjack' meets urban- any
specific references for this inspired combination?!
I was looking at the art nouveau movement- at artists like Audrey
paintings living in Central Park today and having no idea they were part
of this city.
How did this line come to be?

How does designing you own label differ from working for a large brand?
large brands involved fitting my design ideas into a someone else's vision
